You already know Aflac has supported childhood cancer research and treatment initiatives since 1995. But #DidYouKnow we also partner with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to help find a cure for breast cancer and raise funds and awareness toward continued research and education? Together, we can stand up to cancer! #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #Pinktober

"22 years ago, back in 1996, the last thing on my mind was cancer. I thought there was the potential we could be affected by it, but didn’t really know. I viewed it as a just in case or maybe. In September 2017, my wife went in for a routine exam, and they saw something. She’s had suspicious things show up before that turned out to be nothing. This one was different, more than suspicious, she could tell by the reaction of the medical professionals attending. In October, she went in for a biopsy — two days later she got the call. October 11, 2017 is the day she took a hit ... we took a hit. A hit that staggers you; everything you are, and challenges the certainty of what you believe, and all you hold dear. The uncertainty, the questions, what are we dealing with. My best friend and love of my life with breast cancer, with a blank stare you sit in silence.
After regrouping from the shock, I figured we would work our way through it. We knew we had the Aflac cancer insurance policy, so we reached out to our good friend, who 22 years ago helped us apply for our Aflac cancer policy, to find out what we needed to do to file a claim. With Aflac's new OneDayPay and online SmartClaim, I was able to upload the pathology report and we received our first benefits within days. With the diagnosis, finances were not something I thought about. With the help from the payment on our first claim, I felt better knowing I could worry less about finances, and concentrate more on my wife’s recovery. We know firsthand what it's like to go through bi‐weekly and weekly chemo treatments and the effect this has on one's body and mind. We also know firsthand how expensive this terrible disease can be. The cash benefits that Aflac has provided us has helped give us peace of mind and allowed us to focus on the treatment plan, and the way forward. We are so glad that the chemo treatments are behind us and now we begin the radiation treatments. The prognosis is good and my wife is doing remarkably well.
When you get the opportunity, I would encourage you to take a few moments and review how an Aflac cancer policy can help you and your family. It is my prayer you never have to get news that would be described as a hit, but in the event cancer darkens your door, you want to be able to focus on a strong treatment plan and the path forward, and have less financial worry and stress. The benefits of the policy just make sense. Time marches on, 22 years went by as it were in a blink. The future is not for us to know, but we can take steps to better deal with life's uncertainties, and I'm so glad we took the time to listen to our friend."
